If two or more of the four indicators for a region reach watch, warning, or emergency levels, then the region is placed in the corresponding status. Maryland defines drought conditions in stages – from normal to watch to warning to drought emergency. The Department has also been coordinating closely with the Susquehanna River Basin Commission and the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin as they monitor conditions for areas served by the Susquehanna and Potomac Rivers. The Department of the Environment monitors precipitation, stream flow, groundwater levels and reservoir storage to determine the drought status for regions of the state. Army Corps of Engineers’ definition of drought: “periods of time when natural or managed water systems do not provide enough water to meet established human and environmental uses because of natural shortfalls in precipitation or stream flow.” Information on current conditions and Maryland’s drought management plan is available on MDE’s website at. “The Department of the Environment is stepping up its efforts to monitor conditions and work with local water systems and drought response coordinators to sustain our state’s most precious liquid asset.” “Water conservation and efficiency are always smart– especially during extended periods of reduced rainfall,” said Maryland Secretary of the Environment Ben Grumbles. Overall conditions in all other regions of Maryland – including areas served by Baltimore City and Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission public water systems, which have significant water reserves – remain within normal ranges. Rainfall and stream flow levels are below normal in that region. During a drought warning, the Maryland Department of the Environment increases oversight of water supply conditions and encourages citizens and businesses to voluntarily reduce their water use. The department issued the warning based on a continuing lack of precipitation that has led to lower-than-normal stream flows and groundwater levels for this time of year in parts of Maryland. Competitive players can compete in 1-on-1 to climb through the rankings. The game supports both local and online play. Either the last player with at least one stock or the player with the most points wins the match. Entering a blastzone will result in the player losing a stock and their character respawning on stage. The darker the color is, the farther the character will be knocked back when hit until a hit forces them into a blastzone. Damage can be seen on the color display around each player's character icon, which darkens progressively from white to red to black as the character continues to get hit. This can be done either by forcing them into one of the blastzones with an attack, or by preventing them from returning to stage and allowing gravity to force them into the bottom blastzone. There is plenty of time for students to interact. I love teaching languages in the block scheduling for the following reasons:ġ. I started out teaching in a traditional school for my first 7 years of teaching. I have been a language teacher for over 25 years. We have 90 minute classes divided into two semesters so that students taking a language class will be in language for either the first or second semester and will meet everyday for 90 minutes for one semester. Keiko had block scheduling in our school since its establishment in 1996. Posted by Denise Keplinger-Sorkin sponsored by Keiko Irino (thanks for the question and platform dear colleague) BUT I do see that daily practice is of paramount importance for the comfort and success of my students. I personally don't have a preference for my own comfort level, each is fine in its way. It seems like a small and meaningless difference but it does make a palpable difference and I am able to compare both this year in a reasoned way. I have to do more review on Mondays than I like because my kids always have 3 days off from French and sometimes 4 if there's a holiday. In other words, my middle school beginners, speak better than my high school students and they retain more vocabulary and grammar. ![]() Both are fine but I do see more consistent practice with the 5 day a week model. Now I'm back teaching at both a middle school with a traditional 42 minute period 5x/wk and a high school with 3 50 min. for only one semester and they also report good results with the down side being the possibility that a student have a full year between years which does necesitate longer review, but it's better than the 2x or 3x a week model. I have colleagues doing the EXcel model (meeting 4x per week for 90 mins. class, but there is no contest that daily practice gets students further than the 2x or 3x a week model. It is my considered opinion that there are pros and cons to the 50 minute vs. If there was a Monday holiday we just skipped the traditional 50 min. Language teachers were guaranteed 3 sessions a week and 250 minutes. Then my high school took notice and went to a modified block Mondays we met all classes for 50 minutes then each T-Th would be block A and W-F block B. Fewer and fewer students went on to AP and fewer received 4's or 5's. One week we'd meet twice for 100 minutes the next week 3 times unless there was a Monday holiday (surprisingly often) as a result, many of my students did not get enough daily practice and frequently after 4 days off (occasionally 5) we'd have to do heavy review. In around 96 we went to an ABA block schedule. I changed activities every 10-15 minutes so usually had plenty of practice activities in my classroom, my students frequently went on to AP levels and did well. I started in 1985 in a traditional school. ![]() 4/30/2023 0 Comments Eagle eye gun![]() ![]() Yes, that also means that a Warrior with the "Knife Fighter" skill would get 3 (three) 12" throws in their Shooting Phase. All of a sudden, I was free, whether I wanted to be or not, to do something different. In March 2003, my job of 18 years with Boise Cascade Corporation was eliminated. The slow track to graduation was discouraging at times, but life has a way of giving you a shove when you least expect it. In the fall of 2002, I joined Boise State University, Larry Selland’s College of Applied Technology Horticulture Program part time. At this point, I took a short break from college, but continued my education by earning my Master Gardener and Tree Steward Certifications. I picked away at the classes that I could take here in Boise until I got to the point where there wasn’t anything else that I could take without relocating. Keep in mind that I still have a husband, a little one at home, and a job with benefits that was hard to leave, so relocating to Moscow, Idaho, at this time wasn’t an option. In 1996, I started a dialogue with the University of Idaho, College of Art & Architecture working to ensure that the classes I attended at Boise State University would transfer directly to the Landscape Architecture program. This was when I turned my educational focus toward what I enjoyed the most: horticulture and design. ![]() I researched degrees that would integrate into a career with my current employer, but none of these options felt like a good fit for me. During this time, I looked for ways to boost my job satisfaction, which I felt, at the time, was linked to the amount of money I made. I was an observant child and noticed the beauty and wonder of nature.Īs life marched on, I married, started a family, and worked to help support my family. I can remember being a toddler standing in the front yard with grass up to my knees. I believe my interest and aptitude for what I love today was influenced by parents who lacked the time and interest to maintain their own landscape. My path to the green industry has been a long one, and it began when I was very young. Frederick Law Olmsted, the founder of landscape architecture, knew the garden’s affect on the mind and soul when he said, “Nature aids mindfulness.” Some of my favorite results are happy accidents-attracted wildlife (hummingbirds, bees, butterflies), certain plant or color combinations, or sounds you didn’t anticipate (rustling leaves). Beauty comes from the juxtaposition of contrasting elements, including transition, texture, color, structure, and scale. My design goal is to create a space that nurtures the soul and quiets the mind through the beauty and peace of the garden. Ultimately, observation and maintenance is the key to a successful garden design-proper mulching, weeding, watering, deadheading, pruning, and seasonal cleanup. (During the first year, most issues that occur are due to watering either too much or not enough.) As the garden matures microclimates emerge and we shift our focus to what is working and what isn’t, making adjustments based on our observations and changes to the environment. Initially, our focus is on how everything is adjusting to the new environment and keeping the weeds down. Once the garden has been installed, keen observation and meticulous maintenance come into play. ![]() The evolution begins with forethought and careful planning. 4/29/2023 0 Comments Carpe diem schools![]() ![]() Other approaches to carpe diem encourage the reader to transcend the mundane, recognize the power of each moment, however brief, and value possibility for as long as possibility exists. Since Horace, poets have regularly adapted the sentiment of carpe diem as a means to several ends, most notably for procuring the affections of a beloved by pointing out the fleeting nature of life, as in Andrew Marvell's " To His Coy Mistress": At the close of "De rosis nascentibus," a poem attributed to both Ausonius and Virgil, the phrase "collige, virgo, rosas" appears, meaning "gather, girl, the roses." The expression urges the young woman to enjoy life and the freedom of youth before it passes. Various permutations of the phrase appear in other ancient works of verse, including the expression "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die," which is derived from the Biblical book of Isaiah. The Latin phrase carpe diem originated in the "Odes," a long series of poems composed by the Roman poet Horace in 65 B.C.E., in which he writes: The rallying cry of their classroom is carpe diem, popularized as "seize the day," although more literally translated as "pluck the day," referring to the gathering of moments like flowers, suggesting the ephemeral quality of life, as in Robert Herrick's " To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time," which begs readers to live life to its full potential, singing of the fleeting nature of life itself: "Believe it or not," he tells his students, "each and every one of us in this room is one day going to stop breathing, turn cold, and die." … (But) I feel like we are on a positive trajectory."We are food for worms, lads," announces John Keating, the unorthodox English teacher played by Robin Williams in the 1989 film Dead Poets Society. “There was a period of time there when I started to question whether that was the case. “I think that the Indianapolis area is better off with a Carpe Diem than without it,” Bearce said. Last year, they fired the company that had managed the schools and brought back Ogston, who had helped found the schools. The Carpe Diem board chair Jason Bearce said the schools have a plan for turnaround. The other two schools have not yet gotten grades from the state. The Meridian campus currently has a C on the state accountability system, after two years of D grades. “You’ve got 22 graduates, and right now you’ve got 16 recruits, so you’re not even treading water at this particular point in time.”īut while financial concerns are among the most urgent problems facing the Indianapolis Carpe Diem schools, they have also struggled academically. “The big issue here is the financials,” said board member Gretchen Gutman. With low enrollment has come financial problems, and the schools are struggling to pay for buildings and operation costs. (The schools remain nominally separate, although they share a campus and principal.) The three campuses educate about 320 students in total. The network also shifted the students from its Shadeland school to the Meridian campus this year due to low enrollment. The Meridian campus has capacity for 300 students, but it currently enrolls about 120 students. Expanding the network too quickly “led to underenrollment in all three of the schools.” “We should never have scaled when we did,” Ogston said. But when it opened campuses in Indiana, Ohio and Texas, it grew too fast too soon, leaders say. The network was founded by Rick Ogston in Yuma, Arizona, where its blended model showed strong results. ![]() Education leaders hoped the model would allow the school to tailor instruction to each student’s needs and cut down costs by increasing the number of students each teacher could educate to as many as 60. The campus was one of several new Indianapolis schools that were beginning to seriously rely on blended learning, where students spend significant portions of their class time working on computers. Now, they will work with board staff to come up with another plan that could relocate or close the remaining schools.Ĭarpe Diem Meridian opened amid some fanfare in 2012. ![]() ![]() Carpe Diem leaders had proposed consolidating all three schools into the Meridian campus to save money. The school has struggled with academic problems, low enrollment and financial instability.īut what’s next for Carpe Diem is uncertain: The network runs two other Indianapolis schools, and their charters are not up for renewal for several years. The Indiana State Charter Board voted 5-1 not to renew the charter for the Meridian campus of Carpe Diem, a charter school that opened on the near north side in 2012. A school that helped lead the blended learning movement in Indianapolis lost its charter today. ![]() |
